Halloween is just around the corner and this year I teamed up with JOANN Fabric and Craft Stores to bring you three fresh ideas that you can easily make from home. The best part is that these Tie Dye costumes are totally budget-friendly! You can make each of these costumes using Tulip Tie Dye and Tulips paints and less than $20.
This is a sponsored post on behalf of JOANN. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Are you ready to get started? You can choose from the strawberry costume, pineapple or watermelon. These costume ideas would be perfect for a fun group costume!
Strawberry Halloween Tie Dye Fruit Costume
Let's make a strawberry Halloween costume with this simple step-by-step tutorial!
To create this strawberry costume you'll need the following supplies
- 1 White Gildan T-Shirt
- Red Tie Dye
- White Tulip Fabric Paint
- Green, White, & Yellow Felt
- Hot Glue Gun
- Foam Paintbrush
- Headband
- Disposable Aluminum Baking Tin
Gather your supplies (basic white t-shirt and Tie-Dye), place your shirt in a Disposable Aluminum Baking Tin or on a covered surface, and put gloves on to prevent staining; this can get a little messy!
Step One: Tie Dye Strawberry T-Shirt
Begin by soaking your shirt with red tie-Dye (I used the Tulip One-Step dye. The dye comes in powder form that you add water to). Then, rinse your shirt and set it aside to let it dry for 4-6 hours while we work on the headpiece.
Step Two: Make a Strawberry Headpiece
To make the headpiece, cut out large, medium, and two small leaves from the green felt. Hot glue your medium leaf to the large one while making sure to offset them, and then glue the two small leaves on top. Add glue to the centers of the leaves and pinch. This technique will add shape to the leaves.
Now, we’re going to cut out the flower. Take your yellow or white felt then, fold the piece down the middle and cut out two-heart pieces. Grab one of the petals, add glue to the center, and pinch.
Do this to the other petal and glue one on top of the other.
To finish the headpiece, glue the flower to the leaf piece and attach it to the headband.
Step Three: Add Details to Strawberry T-Shirt
It’s finally time to add the details that make the shirt look like a strawberry. I used a sponge brush to paint the white seeds. First, I dabbed the paint and then dragged the stroke to a pointed end.

When you're done painting the seeds, you've finished a very cute strawberry costume!
Pineapple Halloween Tie Dye Fruit Costume
Let's make a pineapple Halloween costume with this simple step-by-step tutorial!
Moving onto the Pineapple costume. To create this pineapple costume you'll need the following supplies
- 1 White Gildan T-Shirt
- Yellow Tie Dye
- White Tulip Fabric Paint
- Green Felt
- Hot Glue Gun
- Foam Paintbrush
- Headband
- Paper Tube
- Disposable Aluminum Baking Tin
Step One: Tie Dye Pineapple T-Shirt
Begin by laying your shirt in an Aluminum Baking Tin or on a covered surface. Put on some gloves and have yellow tie-dye on hand and start pouring your tie-dye on the shirt making sure to cover the white areas. When all areas have been covered with yellow, go ahead and let it dry for 4-6 hours.
Step Two: Make Pineapple Headpiece
While your shirt is drying, let’s work on the headpiece. Cut out three large, medium, and small leaves and one circle that is the same size as the end of the paper tube. Make sure the large leaves are taller than your paper tube and the medium leaves are half the size.
Take another piece of green felt, fold it in half, and cut out a large leaf.
To assemble, start by taking your large leaves and glue around the bottom of the paper roll. Then, glue the medium leaves above the large ones doing your best to hide most of the paper tube. Now, take the small leaves and glue them around the outside.
Finally, take the double-sided leaf piece and your headband.
Glue the leaf piece to the middle of the headband on the underside and place your assembled headpiece on top. Glue the two-sided leaves to the front and back of the headpiece to keep it in place. Finally, glue the circle piece to the bottom.
With the headpiece done, we can start painting our dried shirt.
Step Three: Add Paint to Pineapple T-Shirt
Grab White Tulip Fabric Paint and a paintbrush.
Paint diagonal lines on one side and then paint intersecting lines on the other.
When you're done painting, you've finished an adorable pineapple costume!
Watermelon Halloween Tie Dye Fruit Costume
Let's make a watermelon Halloween costume with this simple step-by-step tutorial!
To create this Watermelon costume you'll need the following supplies
- 1 White Gildan T-Shirt
- Red Tie Dye
- Black, White, & Green Tulip Fabric Paint
- Yellow & Green Felt
- Hot Glue Gun
- Foam Paintbrush
- Headband
- Disposable Aluminum Baking Tin
Step One: Tie Dye T-Shirt
Begin by placing your White T-Shirt into a Disposable Aluminum Baking Tin or covered surface. Take your tie dye (I used a Pink Rose color) and pour it over your T-shirt.
Rinse and set your T-Shirt aside to dry for 4-6 hours.
While the shirt is drying, we can assemble the headpiece.
Step Two: Assemble Watermelon Headpiece
Take a piece of green felt and cut out two rounded, grooved leaves, and glue them together.
To make the flower take a piece of yellow felt, fold it in half, and cut out two heart pieces. Add glue to the center of both petals and pinch to give it shape. Then, glue one on top of the other.
To Finish the watermelon headpiece, glue the flower piece to the leaf and attach it to the headband. You can add green pipe cleaners to present as vines if you'd like.
Step Three: Paint Watermelon T-Shirt
When your shirt is ready, paint 3/8 of the bottom with green paint, starting with dark green, then gradually ending up with a very light green color toward the top.
Finally, it’s time to add the details. Paint on watermelon seeds facing different directions on the T-shirt.
Finished Watermelon Halloween Tie Dye Fruit Costume
With that final detail, your sweet watermelon shirt is ready to be shown off!
These three DIY Halloween costume ideas are perfect for a group Halloween costume!
