I love decorating for Halloween, but every year I find myself struggling to find Halloween decor that’s my style. Okay, here’s the truth… I’m not a big fan of the color orange! Gasp, oh the horror! How can someone be a fan of Halloween and not like the color orange?!? Unfortunately for me, the color orange tends to evoke a feeling of repulsion. So every year I make my own decorations to perfectly fit my style.
This year I decided to go with a more sophisticated Halloween style. I wanted something that was geared more towards my style and less towards my children’s style (which of course, revolves around cheap, brightly-colored plastic orange pumpkins.)
I’m really happy with how it all came together and I’m actually excited to have my decorations up for Halloween this year. And did you notice the complete and utter lack of orange?!? I’m a big fan of the black and gold combinations.
In my search for sophisticated Halloween fabrics, I found the perfect match from Riley Blake Designs!

Invisible Zipper
Begin by cutting two 18 1/2 x 18 1/2 inch squares. This tutorial will use a 1/2 inch seam allowance which results in a pillowcase that is slightly smaller than the pillow form giving it a nice, tight fit.
Cut 4 lengths of pom-pom trim that are 18 1/2 inches long. Pin them to the pillowcase and overlap the corners. If there is a pom-pom that falls directly in the middle of the corner, trim it off.
Using an invisible zipper foot, baste the pom-pom trim to the right side of the pillowcase.
Iron the invisible zipper so that both sides are completely flat.
Lay the invisible zipper right-side down on top of the pillow and pom-pom trim. Line up the edge of the pom-pom trim with the edge of the zipper.
Sew the zipper using an invisible zipper foot.
Attach the other side of the zipper tape to the other pillowcase square. Make sure the right side of the zipper is facing the right side of the fabric.
Zip up the zipper to make sure everything lines up.
With a normal foot, sew the remaining three sides closed.
Turn the pillowcase right side out.
Iron the pillowcase with plenty of steam.
Choose a chandelier image in Design Space. Lay the silver glitter face-down on the cutting mat and load the fine-point blade.
Weed the design.
Lay the design on top of the pillowcase and center it. Put a towel folded over twice below the pillowcase to use with the Easy Press.
Heat the Easy Press specifically for Glitter Iron-On. Place the Easy Press on the image for 30 seconds with light pressure.
Allow to cool and carefully peel back the liner.
Admire your hard work! 😉
Insert the pillow form into the pillowcase and zip it up!
Cheater Method: If the idea of sewing an invisible zipper sends you screaming in the opposite direction, don’t fear! You can close the opening with Thermoweb Fabric Fuse. Just draw a line along the opening and clip the fabric together. Leave it overnight to dry.
Allow to dry for 12 hours and then remove the clips.
This pillow uses the same method as the pom-pom trim pillow but it uses large ricrac instead.
Sew the zipper in the same way as described above.
I used three different sized pillows and adjusted the size of the pillowcase for each one. I just added 1/2 inch to the measurement of the pillow to account for seam allowance.
